IIT Delhi is an autonomous organization operating legally within the "Law of the Institutes of Technology" as amended by "The Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act 1963." The seven Institutes of Technology India (others are in Mumbai, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Guwahati and Roorkee) are administered centrally by the IIT Council, a main body established by the Government of India to coordinate the activities of these institutes.
