Given the growing population of the city of Chandigarh, a second 500-bed general hospital had become a necessity not only to meet the needs of patients in the areas south of the city, but also care for patients in the satellite towns of Panchkula and SAS Nagar. The first 500 beds General Hospital in the sector 16 continues to be stifled by the flow of patients from the first phase areas of the city and the neighboring states of Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and parts of western Uttar Pradesh.
